Trump’s levies deal a blow to Volkswagen

The German automobile manufacturer reduced its predictions for the entire year and stated that U.S. import tariffs wiped out around $1.5 billion of its earnings during the first half of the year.

The German automotive behemoth Volkswagen announced on Friday that its earnings had decreased by a third during the first half of the year as a result of the competitive market for electric vehicles and President Trump’s tariffs.

After Stellantis and Volvo Cars, the automaker was the most recent company in Europe to announce a hit to its profits due to the 25% extra tariff that Mr. Trump placed on vehicles imported into the United States.

According to Volkswagen, tariffs reduced its operating income by 33% in the first half of the year, to 6.7 billion euros, costing it 1.3 billion euros (1.5 billion dollars). The company’s income was about the same as it had been the year prior.

The automaker lowered its full-year projections for sales, profit, and cash flow, and cautioned that if tariffs stayed at their current level, its earnings would likely fall at the bottom of its predicted range.

A positive development was the rise in the number of cars shipped in Europe, where Volkswagen has surpassed Tesla as the top seller of electric vehicles.

The dichotomy between the resonance among vehicle buyers for its newest models and the overall difficulties that electric vehicles are experiencing, along with the burden of tariffs, made it a “mixed picture,” according to Volkswagen’s chief financial officer, Arno Antlitz.

The high tariffs that Mr. Trump placed on imported automobiles have put pressure on European automakers. Increased import taxes make automakers more susceptible because they depend on international supply chains. The 50% tax imposed by the United States on steel and aluminum, two key components used in automobile manufacture, exacerbated the situation.

Due primarily to the tariffs, Volkswagen reported that sales in North America fell by 16% during the first half of the year.

With shipments to American buyers falling 25% throughout the first half of the year, Stellantis, which owns Chrysler and Jeep as well as the European brands Peugeot and Fiat, announced on Monday that tariffs and factory closures related to Mr. Trump’s trade policies had resulted in a €2.3 billion loss.

The second quarter saw a significant drop in earnings for Volvo Cars, which is headquartered in Sweden but run by the Chinese company Geely Holding. The firm incurred a loss of over $1 billion as a result of tariffs and manufacturing delays.

Mr. Trump and other members of his government have insisted on seeing foreign automakers relocate their manufacturing operations to the United States. To lessen the impact of tariffs, Volvo announced last week that it would relocate production of its best-selling model, the XC60 SUV, to its facility in Charleston, South Carolina.

Volkswagen is investing $2 billion in a facility in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to produce a modern version of Scout trucks, which will join the company’s portfolio of brands, including Audi, Porsche, and Volkswagen. Volkswagen has also been investigating the possibility of transferring the manufacture of some Audi models to the United States.

German automakers have been instrumental in the European Union’s efforts to persuade Washington to lower Mr. Trump’s 25% automotive tariffs. They have also opposed the European bloc imposing retaliatory measures on U.S. products shipped to Europe, claiming that because they manufacture and export automobiles in both regions, they would be hit twice as hard.

In the opinion of some European automobile manufacturers, the European Union does not require the protection of the 10% tariffs that Brussels presently levies on cars produced in the United States and imported into the union. They have urged Brussels to remove these levies. About half of the 844,000 automobiles manufactured in the United States by German automakers last year were intended for export.

In Europe and the United States, Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume outlined his “plea” to trade negotiators on Friday. In a call with analysts, he expressed his hope for a compromise that would guarantee “rule-based trade, open markets and stable trade relations,” and said, “We are counting on the E.U. commission and the U.S. government to reach a balanced outcome on the tariff issue.”
