Our Hi Fibre Lo-GI White Block loaf makes the perfect base for this delicious recipe, cut thick to soak up all that gooey goodness. The French toast mixture goes well, with cinnamon and vanilla adding vibrant flavours to the custard melting spontaneously in the mouth. The sauce is where this dish really shines though, with caramelised pecan, brown sugar and cream coming together to make a velvety caramel sauce that’s perfect for drizzling over your toast. It really is a must-try!
Ingredients
6 slices Bakers White Block Loaf (unsliced)
4 eggs
1/2 cup of milk
2 tsp ground cinnamon
2 tsp vanilla
1 cup pecans
1 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup thickened cream
2 tbs butter
Method
Step 1
Using a bread knife thickly slice your high fibre White Block loaf into 6 thick cafe style slices for french toast
Step 2
In a medium bowl whisk your eggs, milk, 1 tsp of cinnamon and 1 tsp of vanilla. Dip each slice into the egg mixture, brush both sides, then place on a large plate. Fry each slice for 2-3 minutes on each side until it turns into golden color. Place on a plate
Step 4
For the pecan caramel sauce, place 2 tablespoons of butter in a medium saucepan. After melting, add the brown sugar and stir until dissolved
Step 5
1 teaspoon of cinnamon, vanilla and the remaining cream, stir until the sauce is smooth. Keep whisking until the sauce reaches the desired golden caramel color and begins to bubble inside your pecans. Stir to coat the nuts, then turn off the heat
Step 6
Place the French toast slices in a large casserole dish or pan, then pour the caramelized pecan sauce over the top. Keep working.
What is the secret behind a good hand master?
The secret to making the perfect French toast is partly about the bread and partly about how long you soak it. Make sure you have the right bread, choose a bread that won’t break in the mix and can hold the whole dough. French toast is of course the best cook when baked. The mixture should also be allowed to finish, so make breakfast early and let it cool for at least an hour if possible.
Does milk mean toast?
The milk you choose is important when making French toast because whole milk will give you the thick consistency you need for a great toast. Adding milk to the egg mixture is important, otherwise, you’ll be left with French toast.
Is it better to cook French toast quickly or slowly?
When it comes to hand soldiers, slow is better than fast. The medium to low heat will give the custard time to cook until the outside is golden brown and crispy. It’s easy to rush while you’re waiting for breakfast, but slow and steady wins the race with this breakfast!
