Cloudflare AI Labyrinth
Cloudflare’s newly launched free tool, AI Labyrinth, which debuted on March 19, 2025, aims to safeguard websites from unauthorized data collection while alleviating server load and mitigating potential SEO complications resulting from AI-generated duplicate content, such as unauthorized bots, crawlers, and scrapers.
The surge of AI-generated content, often referred to as synthetic media, has primarily led to challenges: It facilitates the dissemination of misinformation, appropriates from artists, and undermines trust in what we encounter online.
Nonetheless, Cloudflare may have discovered a viable application where artificial intelligence could assist in safeguarding original content from the grasp of AI companies.
On Wednesday, the firm unveiled AI Labyrinth, a tool that employs AI-generated content to “slow down, confuse, and waste the resources” of unauthorized AI crawlers.
Numerous studies have revealed that AI chatbots — such as ChatGPT and Perplexity — continue to access content from sites that block their crawlers.
Cloudflare disclosed that crawlers do generate more than 50 billion requests to the network every day which falls under 1% of all the web requests we see — and the approach to blocking them is crucial.
“Although Cloudflare has various tools for identifying and blocking unauthorized AI crawling, however blocking malicious bots can alert the attacker, leading to a shift in approach, and never-ending cyber conflict,”

“We aimed to devise a new method to disrupt these unwanted bots without revealing to them that they’ve been thwarted,” explained Cloudflare.
Rather than simply blocking unauthorized AI crawlers, AI Labyrinth diverts them to AI-generated web pages that seem legitimate. The crawler, convinced it has successfully scraped valuable content, continues to navigate through the system unaware that it has been misled.
In the meantime, the actual website’s data stays protected. By doing this, Cloudflare guarantees that the crawler not only squanders computational resources but also fails to obtain precious information.
Key Features of AI Labyrinth
AI Labyrinth provides a variety of features aimed at effectively tackling unauthorized AI crawlers:
o Accessible to all Cloudflare customers, including those on free plans
o Automatically activates when inappropriate bot activity is detected
o Creates unique HTML pages on diverse topics using Workers AI
o Pre-generates and checks content for XSS vulnerabilities to uphold performance
o Incorporates hidden links in protected websites, guiding bots to prebuilt sites with AI-generated content
Cloudflare also regards AI Labyrinth as a honeypot that can assist in identifying illicit crawlers. The company observes that genuine human visitors are unlikely to “go four links deep into a maze of AI-generated nonsense,” thereby simplifying the tracking of bot behavior.
Acknowledging that bots have advanced to circumvent conventional honeypot techniques, Cloudflare intends to enhance AI Labyrinth’s sophistication.
The company envisions a sophisticated system capable of creating entire networks of interconnected URLs that are significantly more realistic and challenging for automated programs to identify as traps.
All Cloudflare users, including those utilizing the Free tier, can sign up for AI Labyrinth today. To activate the feature, users just need to log into their Cloudflare dashboard, go to the bot management area, and turn on the AI Labyrinth switch.
As AI-created content increasingly takes over the online landscape—reportedly comprising four of the top 20 Facebook posts and approximately 47% of content on Medium—resources like AI Labyrinth are crucial for maintaining the authenticity and security of genuine web content.
