Wirtz might make what changes to Liverpool?
Analysis by Mark Carey
Dominik Szoboszlai, the Hungarian international, has mostly served as the team’s attacking midfielder under Arne Slot’s first season as coach of Liverpool; however, he has not always shown all the qualities usually expected of a player in that position.
While Szoboszlai has been a crucial part of Slot’s plan, his off-ball energy—both when he has possession and when he does not—is just as important as any of his on-ball capabilities.
Key element of Liverpool’s offensive game this season has been Szoboszlai’s unselfish running, which pulls in opponent defenders and creates chances for the wingers to enter and provide back-post crosses to an incoming teammate.
With his six Premier League goals and seven assists in 36 league matches, Szoboszlai’s assaulting output could use some work. Early on, Slot pointed this out despite the value of his selfless play.
With 21 goals and 25 assists in the Bundesliga since the start of last season, Wirtz’s basic attacking numbers are superior despite their playing in a different division, indicating more power at the cutting edge of the field.

Footballers come in several different forms. Szoboszlai’s macro energy and strength qualities conflict with Wirtz’s micro emphasis on small touches and dexterous flicks. Depending on the resistance, every skill set has value. If Wirtz joined them, his ball-carrying and close control would improve Liverpool’s assault rather than totally alter it.
Wirtz’s ability to play anywhere along the front line would improve Slot’s tactical arrangement, hence improving his adaptability and enabling him to swap between his offensive strategies both during and in between games without losing quality. Wirtz can little bit of everything: driving into pockets against high blocks, pulling wide to dodge his marker, and carrying the ball upfield alone.
Instead of depending on a center forward, Liverpool has scored with its wide players in Slot’s first season. Wirtz might fit that role very well, therefore obviating the need to sign a top striker, which is an extremely competitive market. Considering his age, he might also support Liverpool in getting ready for life following Salah, who will be 33 next month.
